The story behind the livery
Merpati Nusantara Airlines was Indonesia's state-owned regional carrier, founded in 1962 with a specific mandate to serve the remote and underserved islands of the Indonesian archipelago. By 1972 the airline was operating the Hawker Siddeley HS-748 on an expanding network of inter-island routes, bringing air connectivity to communities separated by vast stretches of ocean and jungle. The 1972 livery captures Merpati in its formative years — a young, purposeful airline wearing a scheme that reflected Indonesia's national identity and its ambitions to unite a nation of over 17,000 islands through aviation. This earliest Merpati scheme is the rarest of the three Memodec Merpati HS-748 liveries and the hardest to find documented in scale form anywhere in the world.
