The story behind the livery
Merpati Nusantara Airlines was Indonesia's state-owned domestic carrier, tasked with connecting the thousands of islands of the archipelago during a period of ambitious national development. The Vickers Viscount was perfectly suited to this role, offering greater range and comfort than smaller turboprops on the longer inter-island sectors. The 1973 livery is the earliest of three Merpati Viscount schemes documented in this series, capturing the airline at the height of its turboprop operations.
Merpati also flew the Hawker Siddeley HS-748 during this era — also available as a decal in this series — making it possible to build a complete early Merpati fleet. This 1973 scheme is the starting point for collectors focusing on Indonesian aviation history.
