The story behind the livery
Mandala Airlines was one of Indonesia's smaller domestic carriers, operating regional routes across the archipelago during a period when turboprop airliners were still the backbone of inter-island air travel. The Vickers Viscount, with its distinctive oval windows and Rolls-Royce Dart engines, was a natural fit for Indonesia's island-hopping network — and Mandala's 1980 livery represents one of the final years in which a Southeast Asian carrier flew the Viscount in regular scheduled service.
This is an exceptionally rare subject in the world of scale modelling. Mandala Airlines has been almost entirely overlooked by mainstream decal manufacturers, making this set one of the only ways to accurately recreate the airline's Viscount livery in miniature.
