The story behind the livery
Mandala Airlines was founded in 1969 as a military-linked Indonesian regional carrier, initially serving remote communities across Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. By 1980, the airline was one of the last operators of the Douglas DC-3 in regular commercial service — a testament to the legendary aircraft's durability and versatility in challenging tropical conditions. Flying into airstrips inaccessible to modern jets, Mandala's DC-3s provided a vital connection for communities across the Indonesian archipelago. The airline operated until 2014, but its early propeller-era liveries are virtually unknown outside of dedicated Indonesian aviation historians.
