The story behind the livery
By 1985, Merpati Nusantara Airlines had grown into one of Southeast Asia's most extensive regional networks, serving hundreds of destinations across the Indonesian archipelago with a mixed fleet of turboprops and small jets. The Hawker Siddeley HS-748 remained a cornerstone of operations on thinner island routes, and the 1985 livery reflects the airline in a more confident, established phase — a refined colour scheme that built on the earlier identity while projecting a more modern image befitting Indonesia's growing economic ambitions of the decade. The mid-1980s marked the peak of Merpati's HS-748 operations, with the type flying to some of the most remote and rarely visited corners of the archipelago.
This is the second of three Merpati Nusantara HS-748 liveries in the Memodec collection, bridging the gap between the original 1972 scheme and the final 1988 variant.
