The story behind the livery
Thai Airways International is best known for its wide-body intercontinental jets, but in the late 1980s the airline also operated a small fleet of Shorts 330 turboprops on domestic feeder routes within Thailand. This lesser-known aspect of the airline's history reflects a period when Thai Airways International was still responsible for domestic as well as international services — before the separation of domestic operations that would eventually see Thai Airways spin off its regional routes. The 1989 livery shows the Shorts 330 wearing the full Thai Airways International colour scheme, with the airline's elegant purple and gold identity applied to one of the most utilitarian airframes ever built.
The combination of Thai Airways International's prestigious flag carrier identity on the unglamorous but workhorse Shorts 330 makes this one of the more unexpected and collectible subjects in the entire memodec range.
