The story behind the livery
Not to be confused with the later low-cost carrier Germanwings, German Wings was a small independent West German charter and leisure airline that operated during the late 1980s. Flying the MD-83 on holiday routes at a time when West Germany's appetite for Mediterranean sunshine travel was booming, German Wings occupied the lively and competitive niche of independent German charter operators that flourished in the final years before German reunification. The 1989 livery documents the airline in the last year of the pre-reunification era — a moment frozen in time just before the political and economic landscape of German aviation was transformed forever.
German Wings is today one of the more obscure and difficult-to-document German airlines of the period, making this decal a genuinely rare subject that few other manufacturers have ever covered.
