The story behind the livery
Crossair was Switzerland's second-largest airline through the 1980s and 1990s, operating an extensive network of regional routes across Europe from its Basel hub. The MD-83 served as one of the workhorses of the Crossair medium-haul fleet, connecting Swiss cities with European destinations that larger carriers often bypassed. The 1997 livery represents Crossair in its most recognisable form — the elegant red and white scheme with the distinctive Swiss cross motif that made Crossair aircraft a familiar and welcome sight at regional airports across the continent.
Crossair was absorbed into the newly formed Swiss International Air Lines in 2002 following the collapse of Swissair, bringing an end to one of Europe's most respected regional brands. The 1997 MD-83 scheme captures the airline at the height of its independence, four years before its transformation.
