The story behind the livery

The Civil Aviation Administration of China operated the MD-80 during one of the most pivotal decades in Chinese commercial aviation. In 1990, CAAC was still the monolithic state airline that controlled virtually all civil air transport in China — just before its historic breakup into regional carriers in the early 1990s. The MD-80 played a central role in modernising China's domestic fleet, replacing older Soviet-era equipment and serving rapidly growing routes between major Chinese cities. The 1990 livery captures CAAC in its final unified era, with the classic white and red scheme that had become familiar across Chinese airports during the reform period.

The CAAC MD-80 is a historically significant subject: within just a few years of this livery, the airline ceased to exist as an operator, making this scheme a rare snapshot of a transitional moment in Chinese aviation history.
